Visiting Assistant Professor, Department of Accounting, The American University in Cairo
Nermeen Shehata is an assistant professor of accounting at the American University in Cairo (AUC). She has nearly ten years of academic experience in wide range of educational systems including American, British, and Egyptian systems. In addition, she has been an active corporate governance researcher throughout all those years.
Nermeen started her academic career directly after her graduation with the highest honors in 2005 where she joined the AUC as a research assistant till 2010. This allowed her the opportunity to enhance her research skills and work on corporate governance related projects for the World Bank, IFC and the UNCTAD as part of her research assistantship duties.
She led her way until she became an assistant professor at the AUC after receiving her PhD degree from Aston University in 2013. Her PhD was entitled “Corporate Governance Disclosure in the Gulf countries” where she developed a disclosure index to assess information provided on corporate governance in companies’ annual reports. Being passionate about corporate governance, she joined the Egyptian Institute of Directors (EIoD) in 2009 as a corporate governance researcher where she wrote several articles in ‘The Executive’ magazine.
Nermeen is the current faculty advisor of Corporate Governance Club which is the first Egyptian student-based academic club that is dedicated to the dissemination of corporate governance principles and best practices among undergraduate students. It aims at encouraging interdisciplinary dialogues among students of business, management, finance, economics, and accounting who share a common interest in working in a fair and transparent corporate environment. She served as a panelist in the selection committee of students for the academic year 2015-2016 Fulbright Student Program conducted by the Fulbright Commission in Egypt which aims to select students who want to study their MBA or MSc in the US.
Nermeen has also published her corporate governance research in international peer reviewed journals. In 2013, she was fully funded by the IFC and Sabanci University to attend and present her paper "The Extent of Corporate Governance Disclosure and its Determinants in the Gulf Countries" during the 4th International Conference on Corporate Governance in Emerging Markets.
Nermeen has recently won the 2014 Emerald/EFMD (European Foundation for Management Development) MENA Management Research Fund Award for the research project "Review of the Implementation Status of Corporate Governance Disclosure in the MENA Region" (with Chris Pierce). Nermeen is a Certified Independent Director by the Egyptian Financial Supervisory Authority (EFSA). She holds a PhD in Management (Accounting concentration) from Aston University, UK, and an MSc in Accounting from Cairo University, Egypt.
