Kenneth Starr & Martin Garbus to Debate at Columbia Law School
The U.S. Supreme Court: Two Views

Columbia Law School will host a debate between the Hon. Kenneth W. Starr, former Whitewater Independent Counsel, and prominent New York First Amendment expert Martin Garbus at 4p.m. on Thursday, January 23, at the School's Proskauer Auditorium in Jerome Greene Hall at 116th Street and Amsterdam Avenue.

Both attorneys have written books analyzing the Supreme Court:

Kenneth Starr is the author of First Among Equals: The Supreme Court in American Life. An editorial review in Publishers Weekly said, "Starr profiles several major decisions of the Rehnquist Court. For the author, the court under Rehnquist is centrist, lawyerly and analytical, a welcome departure from the activism and judicial policymaking of the court under Earl Warren."

Martin Garbus is the author of Courting Disaster - The Supreme Court and the Unmaking of American Law. In his review of the book, Columbia University History Professor Alan Brinkley said, "Martin Garbus is one of America's most renowned defenders of the First Amendment. Courting Disaster, his lucid and spirited critique of the conservative judiciary of our time, is a powerful argument for the dangers that the judicial activism of the present Supreme Court poses to civil liberties."

The Starr / Garbus debate is the inaugural event sponsored by the F. Randolph Speakers Fund, a gift from Francis F. and Catherine Randolph.
