Law School Remembers Professor James Kent

Columbia Law School recently celebrated the 220th anniversary of James Kent’s appointment as Columbia College’s first professor of law. Kent taught Roman law and logic at the College, and his lectures were published in the book Commentaries on American Law in 1826. Kent, who went on to serve as chief justice of the New York State Supreme Court and as chancellor of New York, returned to teach at Columbia after retiring from the bar.
