Libyan Supreme Court Chief Justice Kamal Bashir Dhan visited the Law School this past fall to discuss the difficulties that arise when governments transition to democracy. Said Mechichi, Tunisia’s state secretary for reform in the Ministry of the Interior, joined Dhan for a panel discussion co-hosted by Professor Katharina Pistor, director of the Columbia Law School Center on Global Legal Transformation. Libya and Tunisia both experienced government overthrow during the Arab Spring period, and both Dhan and Mechichi elaborated on the challenges those countries face with respect to holding elections, drafting constitutions, and reforming previously existing laws.
