Philippines President Benigno Aquino III has named Marvic Leonen ’04 LL.M. an associate justice of that country’s Supreme Court. Leonen, a former dean of the University of the Philippines College of Law, was appointed to fill the seat vacated by Maria Lourdes Sereno, who was named chief justice. Leonen previously served as the Philippines’ chief peace negotiator, and he is credited with brokering a peace agreement between the government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, a religious separatist group with strongholds in parts of the country’s southern region.
