Tim Wu Named Adviser to FTC

Summer 2011

Professor Tim Wu recently was named a senior adviser to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). Wu, who is now working in the FTC’s Office of Policy Planning, is tasked with analyzing consumer protection and competition issues that affect the Internet and mobile markets. “The Internet platform has given rise to new and hard problems of privacy, data retention, deceptive advertising, billing practices, standard-setting, and vertical foreclosure, just to name a few,” Wu said. “The FTC is the agency at the front line of these issues, which have such obvious effects on how we live our lives.” Wu’s well-received recent book, The Master Switch (Knopf: 2010), explains how the history of television, radio, and the telephone offer crucial clues as to how the Internet will continue to develop.
