Welcome and congratulations on your acceptance to Columbia Law School.
The computing environment at the law school is rich with technology and the Information Technology department looks forward to assisting you with its use throughout your affiliation with Columbia Law School.
Your technology experience at Columbia Law School will include the computer labs, notebook computers, computer training sessions, legal and Internet research, an online network, and email. Information regarding some of these resources is included. We suggest you study this material before you arrive in August.
Be sure to visit this website regularly throughout the summer, particularly in July and August, to learn about our support policies, get purchasing advice, and more. If you have questions, they can most likely be answered on the website; if not, please contact the IT-Helpdesk at 212-854-1370 or helpdesk@law.columbia.edu
Enjoy your summer and we eagerly await your arrival!
Administrators, faculty, and your fellow students are eager to communicate with you; therefore it is imperative that you create your email account ASAP. Your Columbia email account is separate from your Law School network account. Email accounts are administered by CUIT, the student computing services provider for the greater University.
The Law School network, administered by the Law School Information Technology Department, is a distinct network complete with its own unique resources. While your access to the Law School network is granted only after passing an exam at the end of your Computer Based Training (CBT) session, your email account can be created and used immediately. Also note that the Law School IT Department provides full support for your email account, so you will rarely need to contact CUIT.
Accessing The Admitted Students Network (AdmitNet)
AdmitNet is Columbia Law School’s online network for Rising 1Ls and incoming LLM and JSD candidates. Through AdmitNet you can communicate with classmates, some current students, and access critical administrative resources at the law school.
In order to use the AdmitNet service, you must register your account. To register and log-in to AdmitNet, J.D. and SJD (local exchange students) students will need their LSAC number. LL.M. J.S.D. and international exchange students will need their temporary CUID number.
A video tutorial on how to register your account is listed below:
Photo Submission for Law School Student Directories
In order to receive your I.D. card upon arrival to campus at Orientation, you must electronically submit a photograph to Columbia Law School.
The University I.D. card is your passport to Columbia. Your I.D. card grants you access to the Library and secure campus locations, allows you to purchase services at campus cafes and the University bookstore, and to conduct other business at the University and the Law School.
In addition to your University I.D. card, your photograph will be used by professors in the preparation of classroom seating charts and for other official Law School purposes, including the Student Facebook and Lawnet, the online student directory.
Photo requirements
Your photo must meet the requirements below. If your submission does not meet these requirements, your photo cannot be accepted.
High-resolution RGB JPG file only; no less than 360 pixels wide x 450 pixels high (1” x 1.5”) @ a minimum resolution of 300 dpi
Photo should be passport-style, of you only, and facing forward with your head and shoulders clearly visible.

You are required to complete a computer-based training session and pass a brief online exam before using the Law School 's computing resources. You are strongly encouraged to complete the training before Monday, August 10th. The training will familiarize you with the various resources unique to the Law School network.
You can take the Computer Based Training (CBT) module online. If for whatever reason you are unable to take the CBT online, please visit us in early August and take the CBT and exam at Columbia; however, it is highly recommended that you try and complete the CBT online prior to arriving at the Law School. There are many computing tasks you can accomplish well before your arrival. Besides, the 2nd floor computer lab can get congested at times, as returning and incoming students vie for the same space. Avoid the lines and take the CBT online.
Please note: The Law School 's computing resources cannot be fully accessed without taking the CBT. You are required to complete the computer-based training and pass the online exam.
If you are ready to take the CBT, please visit AdmitNet and click on the CBT/Computer Based Training tab. Once you are done going through the module (approximately 20-45 minutes), you will be instructed to take an online exam. Follow the online instructions and best of luck. The flash player is required for viewing this site. download flash.
If you own a notebook computer with an Ethernet card and/or modem, stop by one of our walk-in notebook configuration sessions. We will be providing instructions on configuring your notebook for use on the Law School network. Attend one of the walk-in notebook configuration sessions if you have an English-language Windows or Mac OS X notebook computer.
You are NOT required to attend the sessions. You can configure your computer to access the CLS and CUNIX networks on your own, anytime with our Configuration Manual. The notebook sessions provide an opportunity for you to configure your computer with IT staff on hand.
No sign-up required! Show up anytime during the advertised hours. Arrive at the session with your Ethernet card and/or modem drivers already installed. Consult the documentation accompanying your Ethernet card for instructions on installing the card and drivers. Also bring a 10/100 Base-T Ethernet cable if you have an Ethernet card (recommended length: 6 feet). We service English-language Windows or Mac OS X notebooks only.

Consult the documentation accompanying your Ethernet card for instructions on installing the card and drivers. At the configuration session, you will install additional network and email software allowing you to access files, printers, and email on the Law School network via Ethernet and/or modem. Also bring a 10/100 Base-T Ethernet cable if you have an Ethernet card (recommended length: 6 feet).
English versions of Windows XP Professional or Apple Mac OSX only. We cannot provide software, support, or instructions for non-English Windows, Apple, Linux, or other computers. Please do not bring one of these computers to the configuration sessions.
Columbia University distributes a selection of software as well as configuration instructions to help you connect to the internet. The programs can be used for both dial-up and Ethernet connections. A complete list of all the software the university provides and supports can be found at the CUIT Software Center
