You have pending message(s) in stream!

Do you ever get one of these messages; then dutifully click on the link and it always says “I have no waiting messages”? What’s  that all about?

It’s the law school’s anti-spam service at work. More details about the service can be found at http://www.law.columbia.edu/law_school/info_tech/remote#942290.

This short message is to share information on how to get rid of the “you have “x” pending messages in stream” message.

If you have aliases or additional e-mail addresses, like firstname.lastname@law.columbia.edu, you can request these addresses to be added to your home stream. In this way, all e-mail for the additional addresses also passes through your scanning rules and spam trap. Adding an alias to the anti-spam service will prevent pending messages you cannot see.

Please Note: You can only add e-mail addresses whose mail is normally delivered through the law school’s anti-spam service. Although the anti-spam service will let you add addresses such as columbia.com, hotmail.com or gmail.com, mail for those streams won’t be scanned by the law school anti-spam service, because these messages are outside the jurisdiction of the anti-spam service. Only mail to law.columbia.edu goes through the service.

To add an alternate address to your stream:

  1. Login to http://antispam.law.columbia.edu (You must use your law school network account and password combination. This is the login account you use to log into the law school network)
  2. Click on “Preferences” and then “Alternate Addresses
  3. Enter the e-mail address you want added to your stream. Include only the actual e-mail address (for example, john.smith@law.columbia.edu) and not your full name or any comments.
  4. Re-enter the address to verify it.
  5. Click Add Address. The service will compose an e-mail and send it to the address you entered in steps 3 and 4.
  6.  When the e-mail arrives, click on the link it contains to confirm the addition of the address. Once you have confirmed the addition, the anti-spam service will route all mail for the address through your home stream.
  7. That’s it! If you’re done, don’t forget to logout.

Preventive Mapping
To prevent messages from being caught in the spam stream, please follow the aforementioned steps, prior to receiving messages about this. There's no need to wait. You should map your firstname.lastname@law.columbia.edu email address before you begin to advertise it in resumes, business cards, etc. Once messages are caught in an incorrect stream, only an IT administrator can release them. Preventive mapping makes this process entirely self-service.
