Lexis and Westlaw at Columbia Law School

Westlaw and Lexis Applications
Included in the Law School Applications, under Research Applications are the Westlaw and Lexis legal research applications and related programs. Westlaw and Lexis are very large and comprehensive legal research databases.

ˇ Access to Westlaw and Lexis
All law students have free access to these commercial databases. In addition to the  terminals in the student labs, software is available for dial-up access from home. Each service has phone numbers available nationwide which allow students to dial into these services without long distance telephone charges. In order to access either service from student labs or from home, an ID number, or password in necessary.

ˇ Training, ID numbers and Passwords
All first year students will be trained in each service during their Legal Research and Writing course. LLM students will be trained in classes held during September. Classes are taught by representatives from either Westlaw or Lexis. During the class each student will receive:
  • An ID (from Lexis) or a Password (from Westlaw)
  • Software for home access
  • Training (on an introductory level)
  • Literature on how to use the service

Access to either service is not available until students attend their classes in these services (attendance is mandatory for First Year students).

First year students should check with their Legal Research and Writing Associate to find out when their Lexis training or Westlaw training class will be held. LLM Students should check the posted schedules.

Journal Training
Six classes will be given for Journal members. These classes are designed specifically as advanced journal task-oriented instruction . All sign up for these classes is done through the Web.
