International Faculty Exchange Programs
International Faculty Exchange Programs
Columbia has a number of formalized faculty exchanges with several universities around the world.
University of Tokyo Faculty Exchange The University of Tokyo Faculty of Law is considered to be the most prominent and competitive in Japan. The exchange program between the University of Tokyo and Columbia Law School was established under the leadership of former Dean, Lance Liebman more than ten years ago. Each year, two professors from the University of Tokyo come to Columbia for two weeks to teach in Professor Curtis Milhaupt's Japanese Law and Legal Institutions courses. In the reverse, two Columbia professors travel to Tokyo to teach a mini-course to Japanese graduate students. It is estimated that well over a dozen professors from each institution have participated in this exchange. Each Law School pays the expenses of its own faculty on the exchange. Funding for Columbia professors comes from a generous gift from Ken Tsunematsu, a graduate of Columbia Law School.
Hebrew University Faculty Exchange Hebrew University is considered to be one of Israel's leading academic institutions. Under the exchange, visitors from Hebrew University generally teach their own course at Columbia for a semester, or sometimes for a full year. Visitors from Hebrew University have included Zohar Goshen, Alon Harel, Eyal Benvenisti, Uriel Procaccia and Alex Stein, among others. (As mentioned previously in this report, Zohar Goshen is now a permanent member of Columbia Law School and Hebrew University.) CLS faculty participating in this exchange generally teach at Hebrew University for much shorter periods of time. Columbia's professors who have taught there include Carol Liebman, Philip Genty, and Jack Greenberg, among numerous others.
In addition to the faculty exchange, Columbia has a student exchange with Hebrew University.
European University Institute Faculty Exchange Program The EUI is a graduate teaching and research institute established by the member states of the European Union. It has departments in history, economics, political, and social sciences and law. Law students at EUI are graduates taking part in either a 3-year doctoral program or a 1-year masters program. The faculty of EUI are leading scholars in the field of European Community and International and Comparative law from universities throughout Europe and the world.
Under the exchange, one individual from each faculty spends approximately 3-6 weeks in residence at the foreign school. Faculty do not have formal teaching responsibilities, and are free to devote their time to their own research interests. The exchange was established five years ago.
Several of the EUI faculty have also come to Columbia as visiting professors outside of the exchange: Grainne de Burca, Sylvana Sciarra, and Christian Jeorges to name just a few.
In addition to the faculty component of our relationship with EUI, there is a student exchange as well. It should also be mentioned that EUI PhD candidates regularly come to Columbia under our Visiting Scholar and Research Fellow Program.
