The Harvey J. Goldschmid Fund at Columbia Law School
Columbia Law School invites you to honor the enduring legacy of Harvey J. Goldschmid with a gift to The Harvey J. Goldschmid Fund.
Harvey J. Goldschmid
Harvey J. Goldschmid was an alumnus of Columbia Law School and Columbia College. He joined the Law School faculty in 1970 and was named The Dwight Professor of Law in 1984. He was a two-time winner of the Willis L.M. Reese Prize for Excellence in Teaching and explained that the most important part of teaching for him was “to think about not only what the law is, which students need to know, but what it ought to be.”
In addition to being a treasured professor and mentor to Columbia Law School students for more than 40 years, he was a dedicated public servant. An authority on corporate governance who once served as the top attorney at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Harvey later had a hand in implementing one of the most sweeping federal securities laws in U.S. history. From 1998 to 1999, he served as general counsel of the SEC, special senior adviser to then Chairman Arthur Levitt in 2000, and a commissioner for the agency from 2002 to 2005. In 2004, Harvey was awarded the Lawrence A. Wien Prize for Social Responsibility for his commitment to pro bono activities and community service.
Please join us in paying tribute to Harvey’s remarkable life and tremendous impact as an educator, mentor, colleague, and friend.
The Harvey J. Goldschmid Fund
The initial fundraising goal of $3 million, will establish the Harvey J. Goldschmid Professorship at Columbia Law School. In light of the 40 plus years he served as a professor at the Law School, an endowed professorship chair in Harvey’s name will guarantee that his legacy is both a lasting and fitting one. Your generous contribution toward reaching this goal will be greatly appreciated by Harvey’s family and the entire community.
Prior to reaching the $3 million goal, the endowment payment from the Harvey J. Goldschmid Fund will support the general purposes of the Law School. Once the first Professorship holder is named, the endowment payout will support the Harvey J. Goldschmid Professorship. Any income not needed to support the Goldschmid Professorship will support the general purposes of the Law School.
If by June 30, 2020 the value of gifts and pledges to the Fund raised is less than $3 million, the Fund will support the general purposes of the Law School and a learning space in Jerome Greene Hall, the main hub of intellectual activity at Columbia Law School, will be named in memory of Professor Goldschmid. A plaque will be appropriately placed to recognize this contribution.
