Thomas Woods of the Mises Institute presents his book “Rollback” describing ways to avert by completely changing our understanding of government and ending the policies that arose from decades of politicians playing kick the can down the road.

Patrick Garry, the director of the Hagemann Center for Legal and Public Policy Research at the University of South Dakota will discuss how New Deal Jurisprudence changed principles of federalism and how a revitalization of federalism might change that jurisprudence.

The first event in Columbia Federalist Society’s “Madison Lecture Series”featuring the opinions of some of America’s most notable judges.

10/11/2011 — Madison Lecture Series #2 – Judge Silberman on the Role of the Judge
Judge Laurence Silberman of the DC Circuit will be speaking on the role of the judge.

10/12/11 — Understanding Eminent Domain in a Post-Kelo World
Dr. Roger Pilon of the Cato Institute will talk about property rights and their current status as "poor relations" in our jurisprudence, with particular focus on Kelo and the takings clause. Commentary to be provided by Professor Michael Heller of Columbia Law School.

The director of the Windfall documentary will be on campus to screen her film on the dangers and implications of windfarm development in upstate New York. Commentary will be provided by Professor Michael Heller.

10/25/11 — Madison Lecture Series #4 –Gay Marriage and the Separation of Powers
Judge Robert Smith of the New York Court of Appeals will discuss the separation of powers between judiciary and the courts in the context of the majority opinion he authored that stated the New York Constitution does not mandate same-sex marriage.

10/27/11 — Public Choice Economics – New Perspectives
Professor Todd Zywicki from George Mason Law School and Professor Scott Hemphill of Columbia Law School will discuss public choice economics and its ability to explain puzzling legislative decisions and ways to use it as a basis for reform.

10/31/11 — Madison Lecture Series #6 – Kozinski v. Epstein on Kelo
Judge Alex Kozinski of the Ninth Circuit will debate Richard Epstein about the merits of the Kelo decision. The debate will be moderated by Thomas Merrill from Columbia Law School.
