Lecturer in Law

Maria E. Navarro is a supervising attorney in the immigration law unit at The Legal Aid Society. She assists the unit’s attorney-in-charge in supervising attorneys and paralegals, including individual case representation, affirmative litigation and policy advocacy. Navarro also co-teaches an immigrant defense externship at Columbia Law School.  

She has been with The Legal Aid Society for more than 12 years, and has spent the majority of that time with the immigration law unit, representing low-income immigrants in removal proceedings before the Immigration Court, the Board of Immigration Appeals, the federal district courts and the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

Navarro provides advice to immigrants seeking to make various applications before the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service, including citizenship, family based petitions, and other applications. She has conducted various trainings for immigration advocates and criminal defense attorneys. A member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association, Navarro is also a board member of the Northern Manhattan Coalition for Immigrant Rights.

Navarro earned her J.D. from the New York University School of Law and is also a graduate of Fordham University.
