Aharon Barak has been a faculty member at the Interdisciplinary Center (IDC) Herzliya since 2007. Born in Kaunus, Lithuania, Barak immigrated to Israel in 1947. He served for many years as a faculty member at the Law School of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, serving as its Dean from 1974 to 1975. From 1975 to 1978, Barak was Attorney General of the State of Israel. In 1978, he was appointed a Justice of the Supreme Court of Israel, serving as President from August 1995 until his retirement in September 2006.
Barak has also served as a Visiting Professor at Yale Law School. He is a member of the Israeli National Academy of Science and the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei in Italy, and was chosen as a foreign honorary member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He has received the Israel Prize for Law and honorary doctorates from many institutions of higher education, including Yale, Columbia, Bologna, Oxford, and Michigan.
