Articles editor, Columbia Law Review. Clerked for Judge Wilfred Feinberg on the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and the Chief Justice Warren Burger on the United States Supreme Court. Joined faculty of the University of Michigan Law School in 1973. Named dean of University of Michigan Law School in 1987. Named Provost of Dartmouth College and Professor of Government in 1994. Named President of University of Michigan in 1996. Named the nineteenth President of Columbia University in 2002.
