Mr. Trier is a retired partner of Davis Polk & Wardwell’s Tax Department. His practice at Davis Polk focused on financial transactions and products including convertibles and other complex corporate financial transactions, equity derivatives, domestic and cross border structured finance and securitizations (including synthetic securitizations). He also was heavily engaged in tax planning for corporate mergers, acquisitions, joint ventures and spinoffs and structured investment partnerships, including exchange funds, private equity funds, hedge funds and publicly traded partnerships.
Mr. Trier served as Deputy Tax Legislative Counsel, Tax Legislative Counsel and Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for Tax Policy in the Treasury Department in 1988 and 1989. He was formerly Chair of the Corporate Tax Committee of the ABA Section of Taxation and on the Executive Committee of the Taxation Section of the New York State Bar Association, and is currently actively involved in both the Corporate Tax Committee and the Financial Transactions Committee of the ABA Section of Taxation.
Since his retirement from Davis Polk, Mr. Trier has taught courses in partnership and corporate taxation at the University of Miami Law School and co-taught a course on business planning at the Georgetown University Law Center. He previously taught international taxation at Columbia University Law School.
