Kurt Wimmer is co-chair of the global Data Privacy and Cybersecurity practice at Covington & Burling LLP, based in Washington. He advises national and multinational companies on privacy, cybersecurity and digital technology issues, and is editor of the firm’s InsidePrivacy blog (which was named one of the top 100 law blogs by the ABA). He is certified as an information privacy professional in Europe (CIPP/E) and the United States (CIPP/US) by the International Association of Privacy Professionals. From 2000-2003, he focused on EU data protection law as managing partner of Covington’s London office. From 2006 to 2009, he was Senior Vice President and General Counsel of Gannett Co., Inc.  

Kurt is past chair of the Privacy and Information Security Committee of the American Bar Association’s Antitrust Section and has published widely on issues such as the GDPR, data protection after Brexit and global Internet jurisdiction and liability.  He serves on advisory committees for the Center for Democracy and Technology, Privacy International, and the International Association of Privacy Professionals.  Kurt holds a J.D. from Syracuse University College of Law, an M.A. in policy from the Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University, and a B.J. from the University of Missouri-Columbia.
