The inaugural Dean’s Distinguished Speaker Series will feature Tim Steinert ’89, general counsel of the Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba Group, in conversation with Professors Ben Liebman and Tim Wu.

After graduating from the Law School, Steinert moved to Beijing and then Hong Kong to practice corporate law, focusing on cross-border mergers and acquisitions and IPOs. He joined Alibaba Group in 2007—when the firm was a fairly young internet startup. Steinert now leads Alibaba’s large legal department and helped to shepherd the company’s record-breaking $25 billion IPO on the New York Stock Exchange in 2014.

The Dean’s Distinguished Speaker Series will bring high-profile leaders from across professional sectors to Columbia Law School. As part of the school’s commitment to fostering leadership at all levels, events in this series will provide members of our community with the opportunity to learn from the experiences and insights of visionary thinkers and innovative practitioners from around the world.
