Columbia University’s Office of Public Safety is responsible for maintaining campus security. Their mission is to enhance the quality of life for the entire Columbia community by maintaining a secure and open environment in which the safety of all is balanced with the rights of the individual. Working closely with the local police, Public Safety strives to continually improve upon the ways in which it serves the community. This collaboration has been integral in ensuring that Columbia University and the surrounding neighborhoods remain one of the safest of the City’s 76 police precincts.

Walking alone? During the school year, Columbia University Security Escort Service will send two specially trained students to accompany students to their door any time from 7 pm to 3 am, seven nights a week. Escorts carry two-way Columbia Public Safety radios. This service is available from W. 108th St. to W. 110th St. between Amsterdam Avenue and Riverside Dr., and from W. 111th St. to W. 122nd St. between Morningside Dr. and Riverside Dr. Call them at 212.854.SAFE (7233).

Shuttle Service! Columbia University provides a network of shuttle buses among the Morningside campus, Lamont, Studebaker, the Medical Center, Harlem Hospital, and the George Washington Bridge Bus Terminal. Shuttle service is available to all Columbia University affiliates with a valid University ID, free of charge. The Morningside Heights evening shuttle provides safe and convenient travel in the campus area. The evening shuttle offers a Riverside Drive (7pm – 11pm) route to the west of campus and a Morningside Drive (6pm – 11pm) route to the east of campus.
After the evening shuttle hours, the Late Night On-Call Service provides door-to-door transportation. This service is available 11pm – 2am on weekdays, and 7pm – 2am on weekends. The on-call service area extends from Riverside Dr. to Amsterdam Ave. between 135th St. and 103rd St., with additional service from Amsterdam Ave. to Frederick Douglass Blvd. between 125th St. and 108th St. For service, call 212.854.SAFE (7233); depending on your destination, a driver or foot escort will be dispatched upon availability.
