A.B., Harvard, 1963; LL.B., 1967. Before attending law school, did graduate work at Merkaz Harav Kook (Talmudic Academy). After two years of private practice with the Washington, D.C., firm of Covington & Burling, spent four years as assistant to the Attorney General, preparing briefs and making arguments before the U.S. Supreme Court. Was in charge of all tax cases in the Supreme Court, 1972-73. Spent the year before joining the Columbia faculty in 1974 studying Talmudic law in Israel.
