American research universities are the greatest in the world today. This course examines the history of the idea of a university, how they became preeminent and current threats to their quality. Focus will be on the value system and structures of the university; the university as a transmitter and producer of knowledge in a knowledge society; about social mobility; stratification; discrimination; affirmative action; political ideology; academic freedom; the process for generating discoveries; intellectual migration; intellectual property; interactions with industry and the federal and state governments. It examines both external political and internal threats to the vitality of institutions of higher learning that are critical for the welfare of the nation.
