This 2 credit-seminar deals with cutting edge issues facing the international trading system and the world trade organization, with particular focus on current gaps and challenges facing the WTO and the development of WTO rules. After a several week introduction to the WTO and dispute settlement, we shall focus on several select issues that are major challenges to the WTO: the stalled multilateral trade negotiations and the implications thereof for development of rules, coverage in key areas of international cross border trade and investment flows and systemic integration of developing economies; financial protectionism/increased subsidies; stepped up WTO legal and illegal trade restrictive measures; climate & environmental measures, among other areas. The seminar will ihave several guest speakers, who are leading authorities on the selected topic.
Students will be expected to prepare a final paper for the seminar which shall meet the minor writing credit requirement. Major writing credit may be possible, with the instructors permission.
