Section Information
Section Description Provided by Instructor
The Public Law Workshop is intended to expose students to current scholarship in the public law area and offer students an opportunity to learn more generally about the scholarly enterprise. The Workshop thus may be especially valuable to students who are interested in academic careers. The Workshop is structured around presentations of working papers by leading public law scholars.
In 2010-2011, the Workshop will be offered only in the fall. The fall semester is worth 2 credits and students receive a letter grade. The Workshop will meet every week, with two classes being devoted to each paper. In the first class, students read prior scholarship and/or case law in the area covered by the next week's speaker. In the second, the speaker will present his or her paper and students are expected to attend and participate in the discussion. Faculty will also attend the paper presentations. Students are required to write four short response papers (1-2 pages) on the presented papers and one 15+ page final paper, for which minor writing credit is available. Students have the option of substituting a longer independent research paper (30+ pages) in lieu of the 15+ page paper, for which they can receive major writing credit.
Admission to the Workshop is by permission of the Workshop's faculty directors. Students wishing to participate should email a resume, transcript, and (optional) brief statement explaining their interest in the Workshop to Khamla Pradaxy at kprada@law.columbia.edu by July 15, 2010.
