State attorneys general are increasingly important participants in the American legal system. As headlines continue to point to the fact that attorneys general are deeply involved in setting national policy in areas such as immigration, health care and global warming, their responsibilities in providing legal services within state government also increase even as state spending declines.

This one credit course will critically explore this phenomenon in depth. In addition to the seminar, students will be encouraged to pursue written research for an additional credit of supervised reseach. The written work will be eligible for either major or minor writing credit.

This seminar is designed for those students who have taken L8056. It will be limited to eight students who have received the permission of the instructor.

The classes will be held throughout the semester at times that accommodate the schedules of the instructor and the selected students. All students will have regular one-on-one meetings with the instructor and group meetings with other faculty members, state attorneys general and assistant attorneys general.


Students undertaking extra writing by writing longer or additional papers can receive one (1) extra credit by registering for Supervised Research with the instructor's permission.

Admittance to the course is by permission of the Instructor and is limited to eight students. Applicants are required to send the instructor a one page statement of interest. Send statement to jtiern@law.columbia.edu. Mr. Tierney will consult with admitted students to determine a class schedule that will be convenient for all admitted students.
