The seminar addresses the fundamental elements of natural resources law. Emphasis will be on the relevant statutes, case law, and underlying policies relating to natural resources in the United States. During the seminar, students will also draw on pertinent legislative and administrative materials. The seminar will address federal land use management planning, wilderness, National Parks and National Monuments, mining, forestry, protection of our coastal resources, oil and gas development on the outer Continental Shelf, the laws impacting the allocation and availability of water resources in the eastern and western United States, conservation on agricultural lands, and innovative approaches to addressing natural resources issues on an ecosystem scale. Throughout the seminar, we will discuss the successes and failures of natural resources law and policy, the trade-offs between preservation and development, and future prospects for effective resource management and conservation.
This is a two-credit seminar that will provide minor writing credit. Major writing credit can be fulfilled with the instructor's permission.
