This course examines the principal works of Niccolo Machiavelli---The Prince, The Discourses on the First Ten Books of Livy, The Art of War, and the History of Florence---from the perspective of the evolving constitutional order. Subjects discussed will include: the emergence of the modern state; the problem of "dirty hands"; the duty of consequentialism in a republic; the relatinship between law and strategy; Machiavelli theory of history; and his theory of fate.
