L8027 Machiavelli from a Constitutional Point of View

This course examines the principal works of Niccolo Machiavelli—The Prince, The Discourses on the First Ten Books of Livy, The Art of War, and the History of Florence—from the perspective of the evolving constitutional order. Subjects discussed will include: the emergence of the modern state; the problem of "dirty hands"; the duty of consequentialism in a republic; the relatinship between law and strategy; Machiavelli theory of history; and his theory of fate.
