SCHEDULE: Course meets daily from 5-8pm or 6-9 pm on May 14, August 20-23 and August 27. Meetings will take place either at the courthouse or at the law school. Anne Green will provide the exact schedule to all participants over the summer.
Hon. Paul Gardephe, Anne Green (you will receive 2 or 3 field placement points for 6+ or 8+ weeks of work, respectively, and 1 classroom point for this externship upon its successful completion)
Judge Paul Gardephe of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York and Anne Green (Director of Academic Counseling & Judicial Programming) will co-supervise the Judicial Externship. The class combines intensive work in the chambers of a judge with class sessions to take place in May and late August. Work with the judge will involve legal research, analysis and writing on the cases to which (s)he is assigned. Students will also be required to submit two reflection assignments and a short paper and lead a presentation about a topic related to judging. The class sessions will include lectures and presentations by students and distinguished guest speakers exploring topics related to judging.
Limitations: This class is limited to candidates for the J.D. degree who have attended Columbia Law School for at least one academic year.
Evaluation: The classroom credit for this externship is graded, but the fieldwork credits are not graded. Credit is received upon satisfactory classroom performance and the judge's statement that work completed in chambers was acceptable.
