This course examines the responsibilities and challenges of lawyers who occupy leadership roles in the public, private, and non-profit sectors. Assigned readings review theories and case studies of leadership, with a particular focus on controversial issues of public policy. Class sessions include visitors who have occupied leadership roles. Among the topics covered are lawyers' roles in: formulating national security policy and limitations on torture; defining priorities and resolving ethical conflicts in public interest and governmental organizations; managing large law firms; and reconciling personal, professional, and societal issues in leadership contexts.
