This is a class about the law and ethics of lawyering. It covers a survey of the laws, disciplinary rules, and principles governing the practice of lawyers and the organization of the legal profession. Topics include the relationship between professional ethics and ordinary morality, the formation and termination of the lawyer-client relationship, confidentiality, disclosure, conflicts of interest, litigation tactics, the regulation of the legal profession, the marketing of legal services, law firm structure, and professionalism problems and challenges, particularly as they affect new lawyers. The class is taught primarily through the study of problem cases. Not open to students who have taken another two- or three-credit professional responsibility course.
