President Nasheed Speaks at Columbia

After years as a political prisoner, Mohamed Nasheed was elected President of the Republic of the Maldives in 2008 in the first democratic election in that Indian Ocean nation's history. Trained as a marine scientist, President Nasheed emerged as one of the leading voices of small island nations threatened by sea level rise and climate change. He was forced out of office in February 2012 in what may have been a coup orchestrated by the repressive forces he defeated in 2008.
On March 29, President Nasheed give an address and answered questions at Columbia University Low Library.
President Nasheed is also the subject of a film, THE ISLAND PRESIDENT, which will be opening in New York at Film Forum on March 28 and showing in theaters across the country thereafter.

Forum on the Future of Indian Point
March 1, 2012-Columbia Law School

On Thursday, March 1 from 6:30 - 8:30pm, the Columbia Law School Center for Climate Change Law hosted a forum on the future of the Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant. The Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant is located in Westchester County, New York, thirty miles north of New York City. Its two units opened in 1974 and 1976, and their owners have applied to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission for relicensing for 20 years. Whether to relicense the plant has become a matter of considerable public controversy, raising issues of energy, environmental, and economic policy. This program will feature speakers with contrasting views on the fate of the facility and on the underlying policy and legal issues.

A combination of common law nuisance litigation matters, policy measures emanating from the Supreme Court’s ruling in Massachusetts vs. EPA, and questions concerning the appropriate roles of state and federal government entities.
On April 27, the Association of Climate Change Officers and BNA invite you to a discussion featuring leading climate change environmental law scholars from the Columbia Law School Center for Climate Change Law, Georgetown Climate Center and the Environmental Law Institute. Our panelists will discuss:
- the nature and status of pending cases,
- recent rulings,
- challenges faced by litigants, and

In the Eye of the Storm: Effectively Resolving Emerging Climate Change Disputes
February 23, 2010
12:00PM - 1:15 PM Eastern Time
Climate change has been compared to the industrial revolution in terms of its potential for monumental impacts on society and its resources. Massive changes are contemplated, whether it is due to rising ocean levels, dwindling water resources or changes in weather patterns and land productivity. Issues related to climate change have already led to a raft of litigation and promise to give rise to numerous disputes in the future. The lawsuits and legal requirements arising from climate change will involve businesses, governmental agencies and not for profit organizations, will touch virtually every sector of society, and involve many areas of the law. A paradigm shift will also be required as the ramifications of climate change will be borne primarily at the local level and local communities and businesses will have to work together to adapt to the impacts of climate change. This challenge will require a collaborative effort that will change not only how local decisions are made, but what it means to effectively represent client interests.
An expert panel will highlight the many claims and disputes that have arisen and may arise in the future related to climate change and discuss the dispute resolution mechanisms (litigation, arbitration, mediation and collaboration) best suited to achieving resolution and addressing the challenges of climate change.
