About Us

Social Justice Initiatives (SJI) works collaboratively with Columbia faculty, students and staff as well as public interest organizations and governmental agencies to strengthen the Law School's public interest, human rights and public service programs. For example:
  • SJI inaugurated the National State Attorneys General Program in March 2004. The Program hosts conferences that encourage frank discussions among key stakeholders on topics of national importance to state attorneys general. Its website, www.stateag.org and bimonthly newsletter are valuable resources for those interested in attorneys general issues.
  • SJI has partnered with the Center for Public Interest Law to initiate the Government Lawyering Program.  The Program will present panels of CLS graduates discussing various topics related to working in government.  See Upcoming Programs and Events.
  • Working with others at Columbia University, SJI has created fellowships at legal services organizations for young lawyers, who provide needed representation to communities in Northern Manhattan and quality field experiences to Columbia students.
  • SJI is coordinating an effort by Columbia and leading innovative law schools in Latin America to develop a sustainable, collaborative strategy to develop social justice teaching, practice and scholarship.
  • SJI presents speakers, panels and other programs related to these ventures throughout the academic year.  See Upcoming Programs and Events.
