PLANNING YOUR SUMMER JOB SEARCH: MONTH-BY-MONTH

September 2011
Sept. 20, 12:10pm-1:10pm: Mandatory for 1Ls: Introduction to Legal Career Advising, Altschul Auditorum, SIPA building
Sept. 27, 12:10pm-1:10pm: Mandatory for 1Ls: Introduction to Guaranteed Summer Funding and Human Rights Internship Program, Altschul Auditorium, SIPA building

 Recommended Things to Do:
-Work on your resume, cover letters and other application materials (writing samples, letters of rec, etc.) (2Ls)
-Research Organizations/ Summer Placements (2Ls)
-Meet with Counselors at SJI if considering summer internship in public interest sector (2Ls)
 
October 2011
Oct. 3: First day for 2Ls to register for Guaranteed Summer Funding (2Ls ONLY)
Oct. 13, 3:00pm: LAST day to apply for Human Rights Internship Program (1Ls and 2Ls). For more information on the Human Rights Internship Program, click here.
Oct. 26: Insider Information 1: Where Students Get the Exclusive Scoop on Summer Internship Experiences From Fellow Classmates. JG Annex, 4:00pm - 6:00pm
Oct. 28: Insider Information 2: Where Students Get the Exclusive Scoop on Summer Internship Experiences From Fellow Classmates. JG Annex, 4:00pm - 6:00pm

Funding Policy

GSF FUNDING POLICY SUMMER 2012

Funding for 2Ls 
Second year students can receive up to $6000 for ten weeks of work in an unpaid public service summer internship, in the United States or abroad, without regard to financial need. All students who register by 11:59pm December 2, 2011 and meet all program requirements are eligible for the funding. 
 
Funding for 1Ls
First year students can receive up to $3360 for eight weeks of work in an unpaid public service summer internship, in the United States or abroad, without regard to financial need. All students who register by 11:59pm December 2, 2011 and meet all program requirements are eligible for the funding.
 
Supplemental Funding
Outside funding from employers, fellowships and similar sources can augment Columbia's Guaranteed Summer Funding within the following limits: 1Ls can supplement their summer funding stipend as long as the total does not exceed $5200 and 2Ls can supplement their summer funding stipend as long as the total does not exceed $7,500. The Columbia Law School portion of the stipend will be reduced by the amount necessary to bring the total stipend within these limits.
 
1Ls who receive supplemental funding and who are compensated monetarily for work beyond the eight week GSF requirement cannot claim pro bono hours.  2Ls who receive supplemental funding and who are compensated monetarily beyond the ten week GSF requirement cannot claim pro bono hours.
