The Parker School's program on West European Legal Institutions and the European Union deals with developments in Western Europe. Professors George Bermann and Hans Smit lead the School's activities in this area in which a number of initiatives, most notably the establishment of a unitary market throughout the E.U., open unparalleled opportunities for lawyers. Professor Smit is the co-editor, with Professor Peter Herzog of Syracuse Law School, of the comprehensive six-volume The Law of the European Economic Community--A Commentary (loose-leaf) and teaches the course on International Business Transactions in the Common Market. Professor Bermann, who has published major articles and Cases and Materials on European Community Law, teaches the courses on European Community Law and Comparative Law (based on French and German law). In early 1995, the first issue of The Columbia Journal of European Law was published under the sponsorship of the Parker School with Professor Bermann as its editor in chief and Helle Thorsen as its managing editor.
