Latin America

The North American Free Trade Agreement has created a free trade area encompassing the United States, Canada, and Mexico. This increases the likelihood that NAFTA nations will enter into arrangements with other Latin American countries. The geographical proximity and significant trade interests that link the United States to countries in the Southern Hemisphere are giving new impetus to legal developments in Latin America. Professor Alejandro Garro is spearheading the School's activities in this area. He recently published a series of articles comparing Latin American and United States secured transactions in personal property, and he collaborated with Alberto Zuppi on a book on the international sale of goods, Compraventa Internacional de Mercaderías (Ediciones LaRocca, Buenos Aires, 1990). His volume on arbitration in Central America, Arbitraje Comercial y Laboral en América Central (Transnational Juris), was published in 1990. Professor Garro teaches a course on Latin American Law and a seminar on International Business Transactions in Latin America. The Parker School looks forward to the creation, in the near future, of a Parker School periodical on Latin American legal developments.
