About the Director


Curtis J. Milhaupt
The Center’s director, Curtis J. Milhaupt, Fuyo Professor of Japanese Law and Professor of Comparative Corporate Law at Columbia Law School, is recognized as one of the world’s leading authorities on the Japanese legal system. He has also published widely in the fields of comparative corporate governance, law and economic development, and aspects of the Chinese and Korean legal systems. In addition to numerous academic articles, he is the co-author or editor of seven books, including most recently, U.S. Corporate Law (Yuhikaku, 2009, in Japanese); Law and Capitalism: What Corporate Crises Reveal about Legal Systems and Economic Growth Around the World (University of Chicago Press, 2008); and Transforming Corporate Governance in East Asia (Routledge, 2008). His research is frequently profiled in The Economist and The Financial Times, and his scholarship has been widely translated. He is deeply engaged with academic institutions and think tanks around the world. In recent years, he has delivered keynote speeches, served as an endowed visiting professor, and participated in conferences from Tokyo to Sao Paulo and Beijing to Barcelona. Under his leadership, the Center for Japanese Legal Studies has become the leading forum for scholarly exchange on Japanese law.
