Elizabeth Wang '90
After working for Simon & Schuster’s new-media division and for large New York and San Francisco firms doing transactional/IP work, Elizabeth Wang '90 became vice president and general counsel of DoubleClick Inc. in 1998.

Of her reasons for joining DoubleClick—the leading Internet provider of advertising—she says, the Internet “was like the Wild West. Because this is a young industry, [working for DoubleClick] provided the opportunity to apply the best practices used in Fortune 500 companies to practices that had yet to be written.”

DoubleClick’s first attorney, Ms. Wang now oversees a staff of 16 and manages worldwide legal affairs for the company, which has divisions in 24 countries. “No one here is ever bored,” she says with a laugh.

Key challenges include trademark and domain-name issues. “It’s extremely annoying to clear a mark and not be able to get the domain name,” she says. “Trademark law is four-dimensional, while domain names are one-dimensional. Apple is a strong mark, but you have the Beatles label [Apple Records] and the fruit with the same name, yet one Apple.com,” she explains. “Trademark law is more complex than the architecture of the Internet permits.”
