Each semester, the Center invites professors from Columbia Law School as well as visiting faculty and guests, whose research focuses on European Law, to give brief presentations at its European Law Forum. Most talks take place in the sixth floor conference room of William and June Warren Hall (1125 Amsterdam Avenue).

October 26th-27th, 2007 - "The Reception of the European Convention of Human Rights in the Member States"
Professor Alex Stone Sweet
Leitner Professor of Law, Politics and International Studies, Yale Law School
The Conference will present the final results of a 3-year research project on the reception of the European Convention of Human Rights in the national legal orders of the Member States.  Importantly, it represents the first attempt to compare - cross-nationally and across time - the process through which the ECHR, and the case law of the European Court of Human Rights, have impacted upon national legal orders.

Should courts from different jurisdictions consider themselves bound by rulings of other internationa tribunals?  Professor Bronckers tackles this topic from the perspective of the courts of the European Communities and discusses the extent that these courts engage in a judicial dialogue with each other.

Fabrizio Cafaggi is the chair of comparative law at the European University Institute.  He will discuss his paper, "The Making of European Private Law: Regulation and Governance Design" and will also compare European private law with that of the United States.

Wednesday, November 15, 2006 - Constructivism, Institutions, and the Sociology of International Economic Governance
Andrew Lang, lecturer at the University of Cambridge, writes and speaks extensively on issues relating to the World Trade Organization.  He will discuss his current research on sociological perspectives and the the study of international organizations.

Thursday, November 2, 2006 - Is There Any Future for the European Constitution
Twice Prime Minister of Italy, Guiliano Amato is currently the Minister of the Interior for Italy as well as Professor of Law at the European University Institute.  He was also the vice president of the Convention on the Future of Europe, which drafted the European Constitution.

Wednesday, October 18, 2006 - Squandering the European Union's "Mission
Civilatrice" in Global Trade
Professor van der Borght is a fellow of the Centre for International Law at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel.  His talk will address the inconsistencies in external trade policy of the European Union and the human rights principles and aspirations that are supposed to inform it. The talk will look in particular at the inconsistencies in the EU's negotiating positions in WTO.

 

Wednesday, October 11, 2006 - International Tribunals: Have They Failed and, If So, Why?
Antonio Cassese was the first President of the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia.  In 2004 Professor Cassese was appointed Chairperson for the International Commission of Inquiry on Darfur.

Thursday, October 5, 2006 - The Sapir Report
Andre Sapir is the author of "An Agenda for a Growing Europe," also known as "The Sapir Report." Professor Sapir holds a chair in international economics and European integration at Universite de Libre de Bruxelles. He has been a key advisor in several capacities to the European Commission.

Monday, April 3, 2006—The E.U., Terrorism, and Justice
The European Legal Studies Center is proud to host a talk with Professor Sionaidh Douglas-Scott, Professor of Law at King's College London. Professor Douglas-Scott will be discussing her research on the European Union's responses to terrorism. The talk will explore the developments in the E.U.'s Third Pillar on criminal law while also taking a theoretical approach to this subject matter.

 

Wednesday, Februar 22, 2006—How Far-Reaching Is the Judicial Scrutiny of the European Community Courts?

Peter Oliver has been Legal Advisor to the European Commission since 1998 and has worked in many fields since then (e.g. free movement of goods, agriculture, external relations and competition). He has written over 50 publications in English, French, and German relating to a wide range of aspects of European Community law (e.g. free movement of goods, free movement of capital, judicial remedies, competition and fundamental rights). Mr. Oliver is currently a visiting fellow at Yale University, where he is lecturing on European Community law and is working on a book entitled "The Fundamental Rights of Commercial Entities in Europe and the United States."

 

Wednesday, January 25, 2006—Understanding Different Cultural and Legal Perceptions - Pitfalls in Transatlantic Negotiations

Professor Ronald Frohne will share his scholarly research as well as his practical experiences in navigating the legal and cultural differences between U.S. and European practictioners involved in transatlantic negotiations.  Professor Frohne has over 30 years of experience practicing law and is managing partner of the German firm Noerr Stiefenhofer Lutz.

 

Tuesday, January 24, 2006—The End of Europe?

In conjunction with the Alliance Program and the European Institute, the European Legal Studies Center presents Laurent Cohen-Tanugi, who will discuss the European Union's current troubles, including the rejection of the European Constitution by French and Dutch voters, and potential solutions.  Mr. Cohen-Tanugi is a partner at the international firm of Skadden Arps and teaches at the Ecole Normale Superieure in paris. 

 

Thursday, November 3rd, 2005: Judge Allan Rosas, "The European Court of Justice: An Insider's View."  Judge Rosas will share his experiences and observations at 12:00, in Room 600 of William and June Warren Hall.  Light refreshments will be served. 

Wednesday, October 19th, 2005: Mr. Michel Petite, Director General of the Legal Service of the European Commission, "The European Union and the US: the transatlantic legal agenda."  The event will take place at 12:00 in Case Lounge (Room 700) of Jerome Greene Hall. 

Wednesday, October 12th, 2005: Professor Grainne de Burca, "After the EU referenda." Professor de Burca has been professor of European Union Law at the European University Institute since 1998. Prior to that she was a lecturer in law at Oxford University and fellow of Somerville College from 1990-1998. She is currently a visiting professor at Columbia Law School. Her field of expertise is broadly in EU law, with particular focus on constitutional issues of European integration, EU human rights policy and European and transnational governance.

Monday, September 12th, 2005 :  Professor Richard Baldwin: "The EU Constitution is Dead. What is Next?" Professor Baldwin is a world renown economists, and has previously taught at Columbia University.  His most recent field of research is European Integration and he is now a professor at the Graduate Institute in Geneva.  The event will take place at 12:00 in R600 of William and June Warren Hall.  Light refreshments will be served.
