Alumni Columbia became the first U.S. law school to offer its students the opportunity to earn a degree from a foreign law school simultaneously with the Juris Doctor in 1994. Since the inception of this program, the Center has built an impressive alumni network comprised of over 175 professionals who have enhanced their legal training through European education. This network serves as a valuable resource for the Law School and its current students, as they interact with the lawyers, academics, judges, and government officials who are shaping the practice and teaching of European law.
Columbia Alum at World Court Clerkship This year, Cecily Rose, JD ‘06 (pictured right), was selected to participate in the clerkship program at the International Court of Justice (ICJ or World Court). Each year a select group of law schools from the United States and abroad are invited to nominate students for the University Traineeship Program. The clerkship begins in September and lasts nine months, although trainees sometimes extend their stay to participate in The Hague Academy of International Law, or through private arrangement with the judges. Trainees generally work directly for one or two individual judges. They assist members of the Court by researching, preparing case files, and drafting various types of documents.
Columbia Grads Earn Dean Acheson Internship The European Legal Studies Center proudly congratulates Jason Casey, of the JD Class of 2004, and Emmanuelle Henry (pictured left), of the JD Class of 2007, on being selected to participate in the prestigious Dean Acheson Legal Stage program at the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg, one of the most sought-after internships in the European Union. Emmanuelle will be working in chambers in close association with judges, gaining insight into the collegial judicial process that is characteristic of the European Court. She now joins eleven other Columbia JD and LLM graduates who have been selected to participate in the program in past years.
While at Columbia, Jason worked on the Columbia Journal of European Law and in 2003-2004 was its co-Editor in Chief. Jason previously worked on a project at the International Centre for Migration Development in Vienna, Austria to produce a handbook on European asylum law. Since graduating from CLS in 2004, Jason has worked in the New York office of Latham & Watkins, representing clients in a variety of matters - including international contract disputes and securities claims. In spring 2007, Jason will be a stagiaire in the chambers of Judge Nicholas James Forwood at the Court of First Instance in Luxembourg.
Emmanuelle will be in the chambers of Judge Thomas von Danwitz of the Court of Justice from October to December of 2007. While at CLS, Emmanuelle studied abroad at Sciences Po, earning a master's degree. She also served as Articles Editor for the Columbia Journal of European Law. Emmanuelle did summer work at the law firm of Greenberg Traurig.
