Taught by Professor George Bermannand Visiting
Professor Petros Mavroidis, this course provides an interdisciplinary
presentation and analysis of the WTO Dispute
Settlement Procedures (DSP). The WTO DSP is the only existing
paradigm of compulsory adjudication at the international
level. The course examines the WTO DSP in light of the general
public international law paradigm as reflected in the ongoing
codification of the customary law on State Responsibility by the
International Law Commission (ILC), and then proceeds to
examine the technicalities of the subject matter of the course
focusing on a detailed step-by-step illustration of the WTO DSP.
The course includes guest lectures aimed at comparing the
WTO DSP with other known schemes of dispute resolution and
at accustoming to an interdisciplinary approach to dispute settlement.
These lectures are given by renowned experts from the
fields of law, political science, and economics.
