Columbia Law School offers courses designed both to train the ADR professional and to provide lawyers with alternative skills that strengthen their effectiveness as advocates. Negotiation, mediation, and arbitration techniques are taught across the curriculum, in courses as varied as Contracts, International Organizations and Business Transactions, Civil Procedure, Employment Law, and many corporate law courses.
For Example, Prof. Michael Dorf incorporates ADR into his Civil Procedure course as background for why discovery, settlement, trial, and other litigation processes are structured as they are. Other faculty incorporating ADR methods into their coursework include Profs. George Bermann, James S. Liebman, Charles Sabel, Hans Smit, and Susan Sturm.
