SUMMARY:Presumed Incompetent
DESCRIPTION:Law Professor Carmen Gonzalez will be speaking about her new book, Presumed Incompetent\: The Intersections of Race and Class for Women in Academia. The editors are Angela Harris (UC Davis School of Law), Carmen Gonzalez (Seattle University School of Law), Yolanda Flores Niemann (Vice-Provost, University of North Texas) and Gabriella Gutierrez y Muhs (Women's Studies, Seattle University).Presumed Incompetent examines the working lives of women faculty of color. Through personal narratives, qualitative empirical studies, and scholarly essays, over 40 different contributors candidly discuss the daunting challenges faced by academic women of color as they navigate the often hostile terrain of higher education, including hiring, promotion, tenure, and relations with students, colleagues, and administrators. The narratives are often harrowing, but they are also filled with wisdom, humor and inspiration. Contact\: lgutte@law.columbia.edu
