SUMMARY:HRI Speaker Series\: Jean-Marie Guehenno
DESCRIPTION:In March of 2012, Jean-Marie Guehenno was appointed Deputy Joint Special Envoy of the United Nations and the League of Arab States on Syria, assisting Joint Speical Envoy Kofi Annan in the exercise of his mandate. Mr. Guehenno was United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations from 2000 to 2008. In that role, he led the largest expansion of peacekeeping in the history of the UN, overseeing approximately 130,000 staff on eighteen missions. Mr. Guehenno is currently a professor at SIPA where he directs the Center for International Conflict Resolution and serves as associate director for the Saltzman Institute for War and Peace studies. He was also Chairman of the Board of the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue, and has had a distinguished career at the United Nations and the French civil service. Contact gmoses@law.columbia.edu.
