SUMMARY:Info session on the CLS-MFY Workers' Rights pro bono project
DESCRIPTION:Help MFY Legal Services combat New York City's rampant wage theft and workplace violations! At this informational session, attorneys from MFY will discuss the organization's workers' rights advocacy and how students can participate. Lunch will be served.Project info\: Students will commit 20 hours over the course of the semester to work with MFY assisting workers who have wage and hour claims. Students will receive a short training on wage and hour laws in New York, and then work at a clinic doing initial intakes and, when applicable, help workers file claims with the Department of Labor to recover their lost wages or assist with MFY's litigation. This is a great opportunity for anyone who is looking for a low-time commitment pro bono project and interested in employment law. Students will also learn about the workplace issues that workers in New York City face. This project qualifies for pro bono credit. To apply\: Please write a 1-paragraph statement explaining your interest in the project and any relevant experiences, including prior pro bono work, experience with direct services or language skills. Also, please include your schedule/availability. Statements should be e-mailed to workersrights@law.columbia.edu by 5 PM on Friday, February 1. Questions can be directed to Cyrus Bordbar, cnb2120@columbia.edu.
