SUMMARY:Current Issues in the Law of Military Operations
DESCRIPTION:HRI invites you to a lunch time discussion with Major-General Blaise Cathcart the Judge Advocate General of the Canadian Forces.  Cathcart will discuss his role as a legal advisor to the Government of Canada in matters related to military law and describe some of the issues facing legal advisors during military operations, such as targeting, detention, information sharing and the challenges posed by emerging means and methods of warfare such as computer network operations and autonomous weapons systems. He will also discuss his role as the superintendent of the administration of military justice in the Canadian Forces.  \n \n  Normal\n  0\n  \n  \n  false\n  false\n  false\n  \n   \n   \n   \n   \n   \n   \n  \n  MicrosoftInternetExplorer4\n \n\nMajor-General Blaise Cathcart joined the Canadian Forces as a legal\nofficer with the Office of the Judge Advocate General (JAG) in 1990.  Since 1990, Major-General\nCathcart has served in a number of positions within the Office of the JAG, and\nhas a breadth of knowledge and experience particularly in the area of operational\nlaw. He has provided legal advice on issues arising from domestic and\ninternational operations and was intimately involved in providing legal advice\nat the strategic and operational levels during the planning and execution of\nthe Canadian Forces participation in the Campaign Against Terrorism.\nHe has participated in many Canadian Force missions as a\nlegal advisor including; as legal advisor to Commander Canadian Contingent\nUnited Nations Protection Force (UNPROFOR) and the United Nation Peace Forces\n(UNPF) in the former Yugoslavia in 1994 and 1995; the Senior Legal Advisor to\nthe Commander Canadian Task Force Bosnia-Herzegovina (SFOR) from February to\nSeptember 2000.
