Join us for two great talks, on the use of foreign law in Russian economic affairs, and Pakistan’s enforcement of foreign arbitral awards:
“Outsourcing Law: Russian ‘Jurisdictional Flight’ and Preference for Foreign Law”

Delphine Nougayrede

Head of Russia/CIS Corporate Practice DLA Piper (2005-2013)

Visiting Scholar at Columbia Law School

The speaker addresses ‘jurisdictional flight’ in Russian economic affairs, that is, the widespread use by private parties of foreign holding companies and a preference for foreign law and dispute resolution. The speaker argues that this phenomenon reflects not only the inadequacies of Russian law but also the extensive supply and competitive advantages of foreign law.

“Foreign Arbitral Awards Enforcement Policy of Pakistan”

Ijaz Ali Chishti

Ph.D. Candidate at University of Karachi, Karachi, Pakistan

Visiting Research Fellow at Columbia Law School

The New York convention of 1958 provides uniform standards for enforcement of foreign arbitral awards. Pakistan only ratified the Convention in 2005, and made it integral part of its Recognition and Enforcement act of 2011. Because it has therefore not yet developed much law in this field, the speaker will explore the foreign arbitral award enforcement policy of Pakistan.
