Trayvon and Beyond: Hate Crime, Civic Equality and Criminal Punishment

Start/End Thursday, November 07, 2013 12:10 PM EST -- 01:10 PM EST
Location Name JG 102A

Join ACS for a discussion with Professor Ekow Yankah, Cardozo School of Law, about the Trayvon Martin case and the difficulties criminal law faces when dealing with race and implications for criminal punishment and defense laws. Prof. Yankah will argue that criminal law's focus on vindication of individual rights prevents discussion of systemic problems, and asserts that retributivism should be replaced by a republican view that justifies criminal law by its role in protecting our civic bonds.
