SUMMARY:Street Vendor Pro Bono Project Information Session
DESCRIPTION:Get involved with the community just outside CLS' doors! The Street Vendor Project is seeking volunteers to help provide legal services to New York City's street vendors. This is a great way to earn pro bono hours with no long-term commitment.Join us tomorrow, October 2nd in JG 546 for a presentation by Matt Shapiro of the Street Vendor Project on civil rights issues facing street vendors and an information session where we will discuss exciting upcoming pro bono opportunities. Non-pizza lunch will be served! The Street Vendor Project is an organization that advocates for vendors across New York City against arbitrary city ordinance and health code violations and civil rights abuses. Students may also volunteer by assisting staff attorneys with casework and contributing to outreach efforts geared towards street vendor collective action. If you cannot attend the info session, our first pro bono event will be on Saturday, October 6 from 11\:00am-1\:00pm, where we will be canvassing a neighborhood to raise awareness among vendors about their rights (and enjoying a delicious lunch afterwards). Spanish or Arabic language skills are not required, but encouraged. Please contact Tim Doherty at tsd2113@columbia.edu for more information.

SUMMARY:The Center on Global Governance Fall 2012 Speaker Series
DESCRIPTION:You are cordially invited to attend\nTHE CENTER ON GLOBAL GOVERNANCE\nFall 2012 Speaker Series \nCo-Chairs\: Professors Richard Gardner and Michael Doyle \nSTUART EIZENSTAT\nThe former Deputy Secretary of the Treasury and Undersecretary of State will be speaking on\n"How Changing Global Forces Are Impacting Israel and the U.S."\nBiography\:\nAmbassador Eizenstat heads the Covington international practice. His work at Covington focuses on resolving international trade problems and business disputes with the US and foreign governments, and international business transactions and regulations on behalf of US companies and others around the world.During a decade and a half of public service in three US administrations, Ambassador Eizenstat has held a number of key senior positions, including chief White House domestic policy adviser to President Jimmy Carter (1977-1981); U.S. Ambassador to the European Union, Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade, Under Secretary of State for Economic, Business and Agricultural Affairs, and Deputy Secretary of the Treasury in the Clinton Administration (1993-2001).\nDuring the Clinton Administration, he had a prominent role in the development of key international initiatives, including the negotiations of the Transatlantic Agenda with the European Union (establishing what remains of the framework for the US relationship with the EU); the development of the Transatlantic Business Dialogue (TABD) among European and US CEOs; the negotiation of agreements with the European Union regarding the Helms-Burton Act and the Iran-Libya Sanctions Act; the negotiation of the Japan Port Agreement with the Japanese government; and the negotiation of the Kyoto Protocol on global warming, where he led the US delegation. Much of the interest in providing belated justice for victims of the Holocaust and other victims of Nazi tyranny during World War II was the result of his leadership of the Clinton Administration as Special Representative of the President and Secretary of State on Holocaust-Era Issues. He successfully negotiated major agreements with the Swiss, Germans, Austrian and French, and other European countries, covering restitution of property, payment for slave and forced laborers, recovery of looted art, bank accounts, and payment of insurance policies. His book on these events, Imperfect Justice\: Looted Assets, Slave Labor, and the Unfinished Business of World War II, has been favorably received in publications like the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Washington Post, Business Week, and Publisher's Weekly. It has been translated into German, French, Czech and Hebrew. Ambassador Eizenstat has received seven honorary doctorate degrees from universities and academic institutions. He has been awarded high civilian awards from the governments of France (Legion of Honor), Germany, Austria, and Belgium, as well as from Secretary of State Warren Christopher, Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, and Secretary of the Treasury Lawrence Summers. In 2007, he was named "The Leading Lawyer in International Trade" in Washington, DC by Legal Times. His articles appear in The New York Times, Financial Times, International Herald Tribune, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, Foreign Policy magazine, and Foreign Affairs magazine, on a variety of international and domestic topics. Ambassador Eizenstat grew up and was educated in the public schools of Atlanta. He is a Phi Beta Kappa, cum laude graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and of Harvard Law School. He is married to Frances Eizenstat and has two sons and five grandchildren.\nLight lunch will be served. We hope to see you there!\n\nCenter on Global Governance Website\: http\://web.law.columbia.edu/global-governancePlease send all general inquiries to cabber@law.columbia.edu

SUMMARY:Design Defects and Policy Failures\: An Institutional Analysis of the Eurozone Crisis
DESCRIPTION:The aim of the Modern Money and Public Purpose seminar series is to dispel commonly held economic myths about money, macroeconomics and government financing, and to outline an alternative progressive paradigm grounded in the legal and institutional realities of the global monetary system. In addition of the obvious relevance of macroeconomics to the ongoing global economic crisis, the series aims to address the fundamental economic problem of full employment in the context of economic rights and long-term sustainable development. The speakers come from a diverse set of fields (including History, Law, Finance, Economics, Social Work, Criminology and Systems Theory) but share an understanding of what money is, how it works, and how flaws in the legal structure of the monetary system are contribute to systemic and day-to-day economic problems including unemployment, excessive student debt and stagnating real wages. This seminar offers a diagnosis of the current European debt crisis that traces its origins to inherent flaws in the legal and institutional design of the Eurozone. Questions to be addressed include\:- Is the European Monetary Union responsible for the current Eurozone crisis?- What role have core nations such as Germany and France played in the crisis, compared to peripheral nations such as Spain and Greece?- What are the political and economic implications of austerity?- What policies should Europe adopt to resolve this crisis?Contact\: Rohan Grey, rlg2143@columbia.edu
