Closing Guantanamo: The When, Why, and How.

Join the National Security Law Society for a discussion about the Afghanistan drawdown and the future of the Guantanamo Bay detention camp. During this talk, Professor Sarah Cleveland and Professor Harold Koh will discuss progressive steps needed to close GTMO, the continued hurdles the Obama administration faces in completing this goal, and the constitutional challenges surrounding Guantanamo Bay.

Professor Sarah Cleveland is the Louis Henkin Professor of Human and Constitutional Rights at Columbia Law School. She is a distinguished expert in international law and the constitutional law of U.S. foreign relations, with particular interest in international humanitarian and human rights law.   From 2009 to 2011, Professor Cleveland served as the Counselor on International Law to the Legal Adviser at the U.S. Department of State.

Professor Harold Koh is the Sterling Professor of International Law at Yale Law School and a visiting professor at Columbia Law School this term. He previously served as the 22nd Legal Adviser of the U.S. Department of State from 2009 to 2013. Professor Koh is one of the country’s leading experts in public and private international law, national security law, and human rights.
