SUMMARY:2013 Charities Regulation Policy Conference\: "The Future of State Charities Regulation."
DESCRIPTION:Public registration for the 2013 Charities Regulation and Oversight Project Policy Conference (Feb. 7-8, 2013 at Columbia Law School in New York) is now open. SUMMARY:Anthony Graves, Death Row Exoneree
DESCRIPTION:Mr. Graves will speak about being condemned to death even though innocent, living for years in solitary confinement and picking up his life after release. This program is presented in conjunction with the Externship on Constitutional Rights Enforcement in Capital, Habeas and Prison Cases. All are welcome to attend.About Anthony Graves\:Anthony \nGraves is known by many as “Death Row Exoneree #138”. But he is known by those \nclose to him as a loving son, brother, father and friend, who was taken away \nfrom them at a young age. Anthony lost eighteen years of his life when he was \nwrongly convicted of a brutal crime and incarcerated in Texas prisons. He spent \ntwelve of those years on death row, and sixteen years in solitary \nconfinement. Anthony was \nultimately vindicated in our criminal justice system, although he will never get \nback those eighteen years. He will never be able to raise his children or \nwitness the birth of his grandchildren. Today, less than two years after his \nrelease, Anthony is an accomplished motivational speaker; community advocate; \nconsultant and investigator in both the legal and criminal justice systems. He \nhas presented at numerous Continuing Legal Education workshops on ethics. He \nalso serves on the Board of The Texas Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty; \nco-hosts The Prison Show weekly on 90.1FM; and is now launching The Anthony \nGraves Foundation, to inspire at-risk youth to dream and believe. Anthony is \ncommitted to sharing his story, to inspire others to not only live life to the \nfullest every day, but live life in search of truth and justice.Co-hosted by Social Justice Initiatives and the Criminal Justice Action Network (CJAN)

SUMMARY:The Law of Armed Conflict & Drug Policy Debate
DESCRIPTION:The Human Rights Institute, The Center for Human Rights and Drug Policy & Righstlink invite you to an evening debate in which experts in international humanitarian law (IHL) will debate the law of armed conflict and its application to drug related violence. The debate will begin with a brief overview of IHL. Speakers will address such questions as When does drug-related violence fulfil the traditional criteria for the applicability of the law of armed conflict? Is a political objective of an armed group a condition for the applicability of the law of armed conflict? Can drug lords/traffickers be subject of targeted killings? What are the implications of a "conduct of hostilities" against and by drug lords/traffickers for civilians? Can crop eradication be subject to the laws of armed conflict? Speakers will contextualize their remarks with regional problems. The event is open to all. A reception will follow the discussion in Case Lounge. Please rsvp to gmoses@law.columbia.edu \nSpeakers\: Marco Sassoli, Director, Department of International law and International Organization, University of Geneva Noam Lubell, School of Law, University of Essex \nModerator\: Gabor Rona, International Legal Director, Human Rights First

SUMMARY:Human Rights & International Humanitarian Law in Non-International Armed Conflict
DESCRIPTION:Marco Sassoli, Director of the Department of International Law and International Organization at the University of Geneva will discuss human rights and International Humanitarian Law (the law of war) in non-international armed conflict. As treaty, IHL is less detailed in non-international armed conflicts. Because most of these conflicts occur on the territory of the State involved, Human Rights Law should have a greater role than it does in international armed conflicts. However, as customary law or by analogy, the more detailed and less protective rules of IHL of international armed conflicts may come back as lex specialis and crowd out human rights. This discussion is not only theoretically interesting, but also has important practical repercussions, making the difference between life and death, and between indefinite detention without judicial control, when the admissibility of killing and detaining fighters is analysed. Please contact hri@law.columbia.edu for more information.

SUMMARY:GETTING THE MOST FROM CLASSES
DESCRIPTION:ATTENTION 1Ls\: Is there “Room for Improvement” in your classroom skills? Then come to the Academic Success lunch on Friday, February 15, at 12\:10 p.m.!You’ve made it through one semester, but you might not be sure whether you are getting the most out of your lectures. These are the types of questions we will be addressing on Friday and in our second session to be held on March 1.But we also want to know what you think you need to “brush up” on or to get some pointers about. So, when you register, you’ll have the opportunity to submit a question that you’d like to have addressed or a topic that you’d like to have covered during the session. Please take advantage of this. It’s really important to us that we make these sessions useful for you, so please tell us what’s on your mind.
